Since May of 2007 our office has switched to using the Kodak system of digital x-rays. The picture is instant on the computer monitor. The advantage to our patient is that we are using between 1/4 and 1/3 of the x-ray exposure that we were previously using with film. If the density of the x-ray is not perfect it can be adjusted so that another x-ray does need to be retaken. The Kodak system also comes with a program to verify any suspected cavities. The radiograph picture can be enlarged to fill the full monitor screen which allows for an easier diagnosis and also allows the parent to see the results of the x-ray examination.
Digital x-rays have an environmental advantage. We no longer have to dispose of the lead foils nor the toxic chemicals which are used with x-ray film.
